Research and development (R&D) is the activity which generates new ideas and gives benefit either the individual industry or the sector as a whole. There is a cost and it is important that the activity is carried out to achieve the maximum benefit from the expenditure of time and effort. Research can provide new ideas, and development can make an existing production cheaper, better or more desirable. In order that the leather sector is able to pay its way, it must have products which can be made and sold at a profit. However the products have a much demand at a particular time, no sector can rest on its laurels indefinitely. Circumstances change, new regulations come into force, markets and fashions change, alternatives and competing products become available and thus a particular product becomes less competitive or less in demand. These changes represent a new challenge to leather researchers, calling for renewed research and development to rescue a traditional industry and guide it to greater luster as the producer of prestige materials for shoes and products.
